Lights, reflectors and the StVO details people argue about

Internet arguments about bicycle lighting are endless. Dusk in November is not. Here is the practical layer riders actually feel.

Cyclist riding through wet weather

The goal is boring predictability

German road traffic rules set expectations for bicycle lighting, reflectors and an audible warning device. Exact technical wording can be updated, so official texts remain authoritative. For everyday riders, the lived requirement is simpler: other people must understand where you are and where you are going when the light fades.

A bright helmet lamp is useful as an extra. It is not a philosophy that replaces a proper rear light mounted where drivers expect to see one. Reflectors still help when a battery dies at the worst moment.

If your lighting system needs a pep talk before every ride, it is not a system.

Dynamo honesty

Hub dynamos remove the charge ritual and keep lights available when you leave work later than planned. They add a little resistance and cost more up front. For frequent night commuting, that trade is usually excellent. For occasional evening rides, quality battery lights can be enough if you actually recharge them.

Mounting matters as much as lumen bragging. A front light aimed into drivers’ eyes helps nobody. A rear light hidden under a saddlebag helps nobody. Test the bike as loaded as you ride it.

Field note

We keep a cheap spare rear light in the office drawer at Hasensprung 29 for exactly one reason: people borrow bikes and discover empty batteries only after the streetlights feel suddenly far apart.

A dusk checklist that fits in two minutes

  • Front and rear lights switch on before you need them, not after the first dark underpass.
  • Lenses are clean enough to do their job after a muddy week.
  • Reflectors face roughly where traffic looks.
  • Brake levers still feel confident with gloves.
  • Bell works. It is unfashionable and occasionally perfect.

Clothing colour can help, but it is a supplement. Wet asphalt and low winter sun create enough camouflage without adding a black-on-black bicycle to the scene.

When in doubt, choose the setup you will maintain. A legally elegant configuration that stays switched off in a drawer is worse than a simple pair of lights you actually use.
